Typographical Tuesday-Kafkaesque

It had to be Tuesday or Thursday of course so that I could make use of the ‘blog friendly’ alliteration in the title. I am so excited about my first type Tuesday as it references one of my literary heroes. The manuscripts of Franz Kafka had such an impact on Finnish graphic and type designer Julia Sysmäläinen that she decided to convert his handwriting into a digital script, FF Mr K, and it is beautiful as you will see below.

Unfortunately, the ‘FF Mr K’ font wouldn’t work for this blog. The search for the perfect font continues.

Etsy never ceases to amaze me. I managed to find some Kafka related goodies. I am particularly taken with the work of Iris Schwarz, her shop Paulette Edition carries the “Ceci n’est pas Kafka” print that heads up this post.

I also like this greeting card from Bunkleberry Studios. I am a sucker for quotes!

“In the fight between you and the world, back the world.” Kafka
I love this quote but find myself adding the word “natural” to “world”.
thanks for a thoughtful start to tuesday.

Good morning Margie, It is early where you are! Yay, a fellow Kafka fan, yet another subject that I hope to do more justice to at some point soon. “I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? …we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.” Franz Kafka- This is probably my favourite quote from Kafka’s letters, it makes my hair stand on end, it is glacial, hard; it affects me like thousands of tiny pin pricks! I am quite emotional about it as you can see. Thank you for bringing these words back to me, I should really edit the post to include them. Wonderful interview again today, how fantastic to be introduced to someone new, I am a big fan of Vivienne’s work and style as of this morning. How her work slipped below my radar I have no idea.
